American Federation of Musicians

Intro

The American Federation of Musicians is the largest entertainment union in the world and as a result, their day-to-day business of management had become more and more complex. They knew they needed the power of the Internet for member recruitment and retention, as well as managing secure, real-time online information management systems. Lucidia’s work for the Federation has included the delivery of a new website and the creation of web-based business solutions.

Objective into Results

The AFM website had the potential to become the single authoritative point for all AFM records with a web-based authentication system capable of controlling tiered access for public (non-members), members, delegates, officers and staff.

In planning the web-based information management system we were excited by the possibilities as we examined the organization’s communication pathways. To succeed, we would have to create solid business logic and rock-solid stability in the function of the site while insuring ease of navigation and quick access to documents.

Launched in January 2008, the new AFM.org website has enjoyed a steady increase in visitors and the federation has successfully recruited more than 900 new members through the online registration process. The new information management system has resulted in both locals and the Federation spending less time manhandling information and more time and energy focused outwards on recruitment and building new programs for the members.

Conclusion

Our goal was to provide the AFM with modern tools to meet 21st century challenges. As the AFM moved into its second century, the union has continued to protect professional musicians in every area of the music business. Today they have the resources to do this more effectively, increasing efficiency and saving money.

Idea into Approach

We realized Lucidia could provide two unique solutions to meet the Federation’s needs. First we would build an appealing interactive website to attract new members, service existing members and build an AFM online community.

Second, and following completion of the website, we would build a new web-based information management system to improve AFM administration and business activities.

The design of the new website was created to attract younger demographics while paying tribute to the rich and diverse history of the union. The messaging focused on service and member protection and the website provided the call to action “Join Now”, and offered a secure platform for online registration and payment.

In order to take advantage of online recruitment opportunities, a secure online registration and payment function was added to the website. The information management system was designed to incorporate the complex functionality associated with a large membership organization and was built to offer both custom document management and a full set of membership tools.
